Status : Online | It seems that adventure games can be catagorized several different ways: first versus third person versus a little of both; puzzle versus inventory versus combination of both; point & click versus key control versus a little of both; and on and on. Like the mystery genre in books - you can have first or third perspective and all other kinds of categories.
A little while after I have played a good game that I enjoyed (a game can be good without my having enjoyed it), I have to really think about what perspective was used.
Whether a game is in third or first should depend on the mood and atmosphere the designer is trying to create and the story the writer is telling. How good the game is depends on how well all the elements of the game mesh.
I do agree, however, that third person would win a popularity contest - but that may be my own bias.
