Status : Online | You are sent on a mission; it is critical for the war effort, they tell you. But their eyes are cold and empty, and there are ghosts in the ruins of the world. Hell is closer than we think. You feel ill.
The Great Machine is a work of interactive fiction in the much-maligned CYOA-style. It is a dark and experimental story about soldiers, war, death, and people faced with hell.
Written and designed by Jonas Kyratzes (me!), developed using Adventure Book by Jon Ingold.
Download it for free from my site. It's only a few measly KB.
You can get the game as an installer for Windows, a DOS executable which also runs on Windows, and of course as a Z-code file (for those who prefer to play with their own interpreter).
The game, despite being very dark, is easy to play; it is the story and the experience that matter to me. But I warn you - this is not light stuff.
Feedback (including 'this is not a real game!' and 'you suck!') will be appreciated. Large amounts of cash will be appreciated even more.
Go ahead. Play it. Then scream at me.

I've tested the Z-Code version. As you've done it using Adventure Book it's a multiple choice "adventure". Actually it doesn't matter what you choose, you will always get the same results in the end.
There are no real choices, so I wouldn't really call it Interactive Fiction, as the interactive part is very small. You play around too much which spaces and linefeeds. People might want to try it out on a small screen (like a PDA) and there these things are just messing up the display.
I guess you wanted to create a disturbing atmosphere but I you overshot the mark a bit. Sorry that this is not a positive review but I think you deserve some feedback, even if it's negative. After all, this is just my two penny worth.

Hey, that's perfectly within your rights. My games are usually like that - a lot of people like them, and a lot of people don't. I got a great review from DIY Games, so I'm happy .
Couple of notes, though:
- The fact that the choices you make don't matter - well, quite obviously that is intentional, and is referred to in the game itself. It ain't called the Great Machine for nothing.
- The fact that the form of the text might not work on some screens is sad, but is not something that I can or should draw into consideration; presenting the text the way that I did is the only way of telling the story in the way that I feel it must be told.
