Status : Online | If I didn't have played Knights of the Old Republic three months ago this post would have been ''Anachronox is the best RPG ever!'' and right now I'm playing Final Fantasy VII(PC) and it's just as fun, it might even be better than Anachronox so I'm getting confused with all these wonderful games.
Huge planets to explore, tons of original quests, epic storyline, the writing is great and funny, unique characters(your party consists of a planet, a comic book hero, a little robot, an old man, a scientist and more! They all have interesting personalities too). It keeps getting better and better and there is so much gameplay, I understand why it was constantly delayed, the universe is so big!
The game takes place in very diverse settings: a comic book world, an english town, a waugees world(Star Wars parody), a monastery, a futuristic city etc. The combat is fun, not hard(well, I'm playing on very easy...) and there is not too much of it, you don't even have to fight once on Hephaestus.
Anachronox is 10$ or less and works well on XP, download the official/unofficial patches and GCT Setup on www.planetanachronox.com for a bug-free experience, I'm playing at 1600x1200 with no problem.
Anachronox was way before its time! With an updated technology, I'm sure it would sell well and have the success it deserve.

| Deleted User | Yeah, I'm playing this also at the moment... Its fun...
I'm a little miffed though that all 3D sound has been disabled if you run Win2K, but you cant have everything...
I like games with funny one liners etc... Its what made Monkey Island and many other early lucas Arts adventures so enjoyable and Anachronox has plenty.
I've lined up some other oldies I didnt get to play, as they seem to have been rereleased or something, but I have just ordered and am looking forward to playing Planescape Torment and Fallout 1 & 2. I'm a bit of a graphics junkie so I hope I can look past the graphics; I've managed to with Anachronox, so there's hope for me yet

Status : Online | Very interesting. I have now heard many people rave about this game even though it received rather tepid reviews when it came out.
You mention the gameplay - is there a lot of fighting involved, or is it more of a "questing" type of game?
Is it more in kin with Japanese console RPGs or Western strategy-like PC ones?

Anachronox is more like a Japanese console RPG, you play a character(Boots) and it's the same fighting system as Final Fantasy. I would say it's about 75% quests/adventure/exploration and 25% combat, play on very easy and it's like watching a cutscene, the elementor system is really powerful and impressive. You don't have to fight at all on Whitendon, Tensil, Hephaestus and there is no random encounters.
It's a long game with a grand finale, the last hour is magnificent!WOW!
The game was well-received, Ray Ivey gave it a A+

edit: I want to specify that Boots is the main character but you can play any of the characters once they join your party.

Tom Hall's Anachronox is one of my all-time favorite SP-only PC titles in any genre and given that many reviews were muddled and misleading, it was easily the nicest surprise I've had in PC gaming in a long time.
Cheers, Terry

Status : Online | I am playing Planescape:Torment right now for the very first time. Anachronox was my first RPG, though, and I loved it. I recommend both of these titles very highly--they are incredibly well-written, complicated, and imaginative games that do not suffer because the underlying technology they use has aged. The graphics in Anachronox are still beautiful to me, while the work in Planescape is somewhat muddy and disorienting. None of that really matters, though, because the story and the characters are the thing!
I just finished playing HalfLife 2 a few weeks ago and I have already forgotten most of it..... :
