Status : Online | I was about to start Gabriel Knight 2 as I'm playing through the whole trilogy for the first time, but The Moment of Silence arrived a few days ago and the anticipation was too much.
It's amazing how much importance getting into the story is. I never really cared for the premise behind The Longest Journey, and the to-ing and fro-ing, endless dialogue trees and problematic naviagation system almost made me drop out of it. Those same things are present in TMOS but bother me far less.
I find the story incredibly entertaining and the dialogue to be the most well-written I've heard in nearly every other game I've played. The sci-fi/social commentary set-up really had a lot of thought put behind it.
I'm considering giving Silver Earring a try, but it may be awhile (Still Life will probably be out by the time I'm finished TMOS). I heard some mumbling on the boards that a couple "action" sequences in the game are frustratingly difficult and for some people game-ruining. That concerns me, although I would like to know exactly how difficult they are, as I heard similar grumblings about BS3 and other than the last ridiculous sequence, I had no problems with those.

| Deleted User | Hello kuddles,
I was disappointed with BS3. I HATE action sequences. I am all elbows and toes. But it is back in my game pile for another time when I feel like giving it the effort.
The Longest Journey ended up as one of my favorite games. But that was after I started it 3 or 4 times. The excess dialog threw me off. But when I really gave it a chance it was a winner. I enjoyed the quirky characters. I am looking foreward to the next chapter.
GK2 was another winner for me. I don't generally like FMV games but this was an exception. The story was tight and compelling and the characters excellent. My copy had several bugs and that was very frustrating. I was able to bypass all of them except the last - I missed the final few minutes of the game. I was unhappy to say the least.
I haven't given much consideration to playing TMOS. I am not fond of science fiction. My favorite style of adventure is the mystery. You need to let me know what you think of TMOS as you progress.
I am waiting for Nibiru, Still Life and Martin Mystere. Oh yes, and Loath Nolder (if it makes it to the market).

You are sooooo lucky. You get to play Zork Nemesis for the first time. It is a great game, IMHO. I have played it twice. And I rarely repeat a game.

re Silver Earring: You haven't heard about "Superdog" yet? You have to sneak past this watchdog, and he seems to have X-ray vision or something. Apparently there was something wrong with the coding so you missed cues, and this was fixed in the German version. (This was mentioned in "The Inventory" Issue 21 interview with Frogwares on p.14. Why Frogwares won't make a patch for the non-German versions of their game is beyond me.) Seems like getting past Superdog is a matter of luck.
There was also a timed maze, that some people didn't have too much trouble with. Most of the frustration with the game came from Superdog.
I bought it because it was cheap (only $20) but have been putting off playing it.

Maybe it was because it was one of the first adventure games I played since leaving the scene back around 1996, but I loved BS3 an awful lot, and as I mentioned quite a few times on these boards, I am quite possibly the only human being who actually LIKED the control system. I found it very intuitive. Maybe I just liked it because I wanted to feel different. Mind you, I like the game less now after playing the first two.
I understand why people enjoyed TLJ, and it was good enough for me to play it to the end. But the story never worked for me, making the dialogue seem so painfully long I would groan out loud every time I came across a new character.  ifferent strokes, I guess...
The reason I'm enjoying TMOS so much, aside from the writing, is that it is more of an old-school sci-fi story, like George Orwell or Philip K. Dick, where it's more of a reflection on modern times than it is laser systems and alien predators. If you're a Bush supporter, you'll probably take a fit over what the game is implying. Like I said though, the navigation is horrid and if you don't like the story, it would probably be too much for you to bother.

Hmmm....maybe they didn't get along with their North American Publishers, perchance?
Anyways, that bothers me. Nothing I would hate more than investing a huge amount of time into a game, only to be unable to ever complete it.

The presentation is a bit limited, the same sound effects are used over and over and there's hardly any dialog, but it's definitely fun as a little in-between game. Afterwards I'll probably start on Runaway and/or Largo Winch: Empire under Threat.
Have fun with Road to India! Isn't that the first in a series? Wasn't it followed by Jerusalem? Didn't really like that game (the same non-sensical puzzles as you mentioned and pixel hunting issues, plus some unforeseen deaths), hope India is much better!

I found it very intuitive. Hey, I liked the new control system, too. It usually takes me ages to get used to controls, but this one worked pretty fast for me ^_^ Action sequences weren't all that bad, EXCEPT for the elevator action sequence. I hated it to bits and pixels >_<;
-----------
Now playing:
Morrowind (4 months in a row and only in the middle of the game... nooo... must.. play.. be.. named.. Hortator..) Just noticed I have Sonic Heroes installed - it's greatly ignored, though. Finishing Aura, but I really can't be arsed to finish it. And I should get around to playing DarkFall 2 - I bought it months ago, but meh.. I just don't have the will to play. I got lost the moment I launched the game - something's very wrong with hotspots and such..
Waiting for Still Life, of course.. I can't wait to play it! =D
Afterwards I'll probably start on Runaway
YES! That game is so good.. I didn't like it much until the last chapter, which rocked my socks. And the theme song is pretty catchy.

As for adventures, I was going to start Egypt 2, but I'm not sure I can stand it after playing Egypt 1. Alternately, I'm looking at my list of unplayed LucasArts classics. Day of the Tentacle looks good there. Or maybe a well regarded puzzler, in which case Timelapse is at the top of the list.

Yes, Superdog was quite the problem. First of all, I could hardly see where dog, watchman and Sherlock were. I had to crank up my brightness - a lot. Second, you need to navigate to the EXACT right spot at the EXACT right time in order for any of it to work. I died too many times to count. I made it past the dog, into the office building and out again. But I could never get past the dog the second time to continue with the game. Very difficult and frustrating. That is when I parked the game for another time. Now that you tell me about the timed maze I feel that I made the correct decision.
jarmarchand,
I too have read that Nancy/Scarlet Hand is the best of the batch. I have several unplayed Nancy Drews to get to. That is one of them.
wimli,
No, I am pretty sure that Road to India is a stand alone game. Jerusalem was part of a series but I can't remember the other titles. And it might have been part of only two instead of three. I might be wrong but I think that number three was cancelled.
I played Runaway. Cute game. Nice diversion. Attractive graphics. Crazy characters, especially the drag queens.
Donna,
Darn, I have Dark Fall 2 and forgot all about it. I should probably be playing that versus Road to India. The first Dark Fall was very good. The ambient sounds were creepy. Jonathan is supposed to be working on a DF 3.

Status : Online | Pandora Directive - I was a little surprised that this game is not really FMV (only in cutscenes). I thought it was more like GK2. Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with it. I'm playing in game player mode and I'm getting killed (pointwise) with the jigsaw-like puzzles that are timed. I can complete them OK but not fast enough to get the bonus points. I like the acting and dialogue, lots of funny lines that cracked me up, but on the negative side I don't much like the interface (floating around in virtual reality).
Beneath a Steel Sky = I don't know. The puzzles are OK but I'm not liking it much.
Five magical amulets - Haven't played a lot of it but it's very impressive. It simply amazes me what can be done with effort and a freeware engine like wintermute.

Right now, actually as of just a few minutes ago, I was playing the second of three parts in a marvelous, player-created mod for BioWare's full 3D D& 3rd Edition CRPG, Neverwinter Nights. It's called The Aieland Trilogy by Savant and it's one of the best NWN Vault Hall of Fame mods I've played to date - loads of fun in a very large, diverse and detailed game world full of interesting characters, quests and some of the best combat you're likely to see. It also has a really solid story that keeps you engaged all along the way and best of all, like all the hundreds of good NWN player modules, it is totally free to download.
FYI - These particular mods (like several other new ones) require the final, patched, full retail NWN plus both official EPs as well as the huge CEP (Community Expansion Pack), the latest EMS (Enhanced Magic System) and a large set of custom item / texture hackpacks. There is also an optional custom music file you can grab at the NWN Vault along with everything else.
The point being that unless you have the full blown, fully updated series plus a number of large extra download files, you simply cannot play it. So if anyone else is interested, be ready for a lot of installing, patching and additional downloading. But IMO, it's well worth the time and effort to be able to play so many really good SP and MP mods for free. They come in a very wide variety of types includung many adventure-like, story-driven mods with real puzzles and little or no combat. Those of course are fairly rare but still there are several good ones that a lot of AG fans would enjoy.
Cheers, Terry

All on hold because I am totally sucked in, playing, you guessed it, Zork: Nemesis! For as creepy a game as this is (and, yes, gory--I'm afraid I'll have to swap it once I'm done), it is really a quite well done story!

In between I'm playing The Sims 2 with the George and Nico skins I found online.
Although, I'm finding myself getting nostalgic for The Colonel's Bequest and Nancy Drew: The Final Scene, so those will probably be after Tex Murphy.
