Hi, thought I may as well see if anyone here can help.

I can install Siberia with no problem at all and still have 3gig of hard drive free after installation, however when trying to start the game the title screen comes up, the music plays and then the whole screen goes blank and freezes!  I tried the medium installation, then uninstalled and used the minimum installation - no difference unfortunately.

I thought perhaps there was not enough ram, but there should be,  I do have 96meg. (which is a rather odd amount I guess) and the system says 73% system resource free.   The only other thing I did wonder about was my video card which is an ATI Rage Pro Turbo and this doesn't appear to be one which was tested - according to the outside of the box.

I also downloaded a patch, but hasn't made any difference, unless I haven't installed it correctly as I have only ever had to download a patch once before which was for GK1.

I really would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas.

Sorry, I forgot to say I'm running Windows 98, but that shouldn't make a difference I don't think.

Usually this problem occurs if your graphics card doesn't have enough memory. Syberia needs at least 16 meg and seriously prefers 32 meg. If you are unsure of how much memory your card has, click start, then run, and enter dxdiag. The DirectX diagnostic tool will come up and you can see how much memory your graphics card has. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Caidi, it seems my graphics card is only 8megs.
Guess I will just have to get a new one!!
Funny, I haven't had any problems with any other games.   Does anyone have a good idea which is the best brand of card to buy?   The computer is an Acer Aspire (and obviously not new!!).   Thanks again anyway.

Deleted UserThere's a thread about Syberia problems if you do a search for it on here.  Otherwise contact Microids on their site and get Technical Advice .......  each case is different.  Many people had problems with this game.

Help, my last post disappeared.   Anyway I just said thanks a lot to Caidi, it appears I only have an 8meg graphics card, thought that could be the case but for some reason couldn't find it.

Suppose I will now have to go and buy a new card - curses!! :'(

Any idea which would be best?  My computer is an Accer Aspire and obviously not new!

Thanks again for the help, it's much appreciated.

Thanks Janelle, I did look at the Microids site, but have to admit I didn't actually contact them.

Deleted UserIndications of lack of grunt with the 3D Accelerator card is with the " cut scenes".. The first  "crash" you will get is with Oscar and his "new legs" .......  MOST people did.

I finished the game with help and saved games, but I took it back and got a refund LOL  Syberia sucks ......... and Microids weren't helpful either.  They have lost a custormer here. >

Not most people who didn't meet the requirements of the game.

Crashing at Oscar's legs is generally the problem people have if they have the minimum required graphics memory or better, and have been playing the game for a few hours. However, if their graphics card has less than the required 16 meg of memory, then the game crashes as soon as it is started up. I have been following reports of this problem to DreamCatcher technical support for several months.

Narji, there are many really great graphics cards you can get for under $50 these days. If you enjoy games, I would definitely recommend picking one up (with at least 32 meg memory)  because it can greatly enhance the speed, performance and beauty of your games. I'm not sure what will work with your type of computer, but two popular brands are Nvidia and Matrox. I would shoot off a quick e-mail to technical support at those companies or any other card you are interested in and just ask them if the cards will work on your older machine. I'm sure they would be happy to help!

Good luck!

And the third (and IMHO the best) is ATi.

If you're in the market for a new graphics card, buy one of those three. There are other, cheaper cards (like S3, Trident, SiS) but IMO not worth the trouble.
I forgot my sig.

Just my 2¢...it seems to me at least 80% of the people who've experienced hang-ups in Syberia that it's a case of not having enough vid memory, running too many programs in the background--including a fancy desktop wall paper and an anti-virus program-- or barely meeting the games system requirements in some manner.

My rule of thumb: The "minimum system requirements" on the side of the box are BS--that will barely run the game/app if you don't have ANYTHING else running.
Example: Some "minimum system requirements" for Windows XP Pro, according to Microsoft--

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system)

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)--no kidding....

Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

Windows XP Features For Internet access:
33.6 Kbps or higher-speed modem, or a network connection
For DVD video playback:
DVD drive and DVD decoder card or DVD decoder software
8 MB of video RAM

Yeah...riiiiiiight. I dare anyone to build/use a system with these minimum requirements and run XP. Select a program to open, then go to the mall and shop. When you get back, your program might be booted up. And try watching a DVD movie with just 8 mb of video RAM---oh yeah.... And let's not forget to download those Windows Updates with a 33.6 modem....
Will it work? Sure...maybe. Will it work well? Heck no! But they didn't promise it would work well...just work.

The same goes for games. Make the "RECOMMENDED system requirements" your "minimum" if at all possible. But if that isn't available, don't blame the game developer for the game not working properly on your system...make sure it is a "legit" bug first before yelling about it.

For a truth: the games coming out now are designed to run on higher and higher vid cards and processors. If you wants to play, you gots to pay. From what I see, if your system is older than say...2 to 3 years, you stand a good chance of having trouble with the games coming out nowadays.

OK, ok...so that was my then...

Deleted UserMy IBM Aptiva Pentium3
WinME) came with an inbuilt "graphics" card ...... works with most games.  A local friend has promised to upgrade me to 64 MB - free, since he gathers/stores this stuff.......  as a Christmas gift he upgraded my RAM ....... my Aptiva is out of Warranty now anyway ....... so far no probs.

ALWAYS check the box for "recommended requirements" .... that is the BASICS you need to run the game.

I personally don't think there is any "best card" .......

"Hotting up cars" was the thing some years ago, now it is "hotting up" computers  ...... the most expensive doesn't necessarily work with what you already have ...... AGAIN ...... trial and error and a few bucks. Ripping out a card and replacing it isn't that hard to do

I'm definitely going to get a new graphics card as soon as possible and also more ram.   Ram is rather fiddly to put in on this machine, just the way the tower is built seems to make things like that more awkward than with some other computers.

I agree that the most expensive is not necessarily the best too, in fact not even always compatible with what one already has.
