Status : Online | What an absolutely perfect game! Real adventure - no nerdy rpg or pubertary action-adventure features whatsoever. Wow. And no unnecessary violence either. I played it with my 3 year old son, who - might I add - also enjoyed it very much (he's a bit of a train buff ) and has me playing it for the second time now.
The storyline was so gripping, just like in the good old days of great adventure classics. I won't reveal it to those who haven't played i yet (though I'll bet you all have, right?), but man that's exciting stuff - can't wait to get hold of Syberia II to see what happens next.
Wonderful graphics too: the backgrounds are prerendered, but beautifully so. And the characters look - and move - so realistic.
The beginning of the game in Valadilène was perhaps a little tedious at places. I remember thinking that the heroine of the game, miss Walker, was indeed very aptly named, because boy does she walk a lot! (No wonder she´s so skinny ). The way you had to walk and walk from one end of the town to the other could be quite a bore, especially since I hadn't yet figured out that in this game, even though you can click on them - some doors just won't open. Ever. So I kept trying to open every door in Valadilène.
But once I got to Barrockstadt, I ... well, I still had to walk a lot, but I didn't mind at all anymore because the graphics were just so amazingly beautiful. Benoit Sokal should be allowed to design an entire city sometime, he would make a wonderful architect. A bit on the surreal side, but still.
I also love how the puzzles are all logical and not to easy or too hard. I think I liked every puzzle except the one with Oscars feet. That was just dumb and had a whole lot of that tedious walking back and forth.
The story kept getting better and better. I especially liked the way Kate changes. At the beginning of the game she is a superficial yuppie female lawyer (who said Ally McBeal?), more interested in her relationship with very annoying and superficial yuppie lawyer Dan and even more annoying friend Olivia than in this exciting and gripping adventure she has been put in the middle of. But gradually she becomes this fearless and passionate adventurer, obessed with solving the riddle of Hans Voralberg and the mysterious quest he set out on. You go, Kate!
Moreover, the game has great humour. Not thighslapping HA HA- humour we have seen in some other games, but warm and subdued. I especially enjoyed the dutch-spanish-french-russian-english speaking sailors.
Well. Now I have begun to play Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silver Earring, but I'm setting myself up for dissapointment starting a new game right after wonderful Syberia. Anything is bound to be inferior to that. Loved that game!
