Hey there!

I need a little help from all of you. I want to know how many adventure games have absolutely NO dialogues or written clues in english. The reason to this is that there are not many adventure games released in my native language (portuguese), and once in a while I found someone who asks me to recommend a game, but since he/she can't read english, there are few choices.

So I ask you: what are the adventure games that feature NO dialogue and do NOT require you to know english at all?

Thanks in advance for your help. [smiley=detective.gif]

Do English save/load/options/quit dialogues count? I can't think of any adventure games that don't have them.

No, that doesn't count!

(after all, all of the games have these options, and it's common knowledge to know what save and load means here...)

And I can't think of any games that completely lack dialogue, but I can think of some that can probably be finished without understanding much English.

The Neverhood
You wouldn't be able to use the built-in hint system or read the Hall of Records (both are mixed blessings anyway), but I'm pretty sure the game can be completed with reading just one word of English: "
anger!" Having the common sense not to jump into a large hole without saving your game first is good enough too.

Seiklus
An awesome, abstract, platformer/adventure game. The one pitfall is that there's a teleportation device you get near the end of the game. When you get it, you're told that to use it, you push a key that you previously haven't used in the entire game, and without reading it, I don't know how you'd know how to use it. Aside from that, you can do absolutely everything in the game without reading a thing.

Thanks Cranky!

Now that you mentioned, I think it wouldn't hurt to also know about adventure games that have MINIMAL dialogues or written clues, like in some puzzle adventures.

I think Pandora's Box might fit that one.  I mean, things happen in between puzzles, but most if not all of the puzzles are pictures that you're putting together or manipulating.

How about Bad Mojo? I haven't played very far into it, but I have a really hard time imagining dialogue or reading playing a big part in solving any of the puzzles in this game.

RHEM has very little dialogue.

Please proofread your posts carefully to see if you any words out.

Actually, throughout Bad Mojo you have visions in which you are given clues on how to approach puzzles, so the game would be substantially more difficult if you don't speak English.

There's some very short online flash adventure games that don't have dialogue (you can find most flash games listed at www.littlefluffy.com).  There's Samarost, which is great, and Chasm, and Tork is an interesting game the whole point of which is you don't know what's being said.

I know one game that has no language/text/dialogue whatsoever but it hasn't been released yet (and won't be for quite a while).

It's called "8" and it's about a deaf mute girl in a Sleeping Beauty-esque setting. http://tale-of-tales.com/8/overview.html

Man, why doesn't someone port this to the PC? It always struck me as an original and extremely cool concept.

Well, while Ico is one of the best PS2 games ever made, I don't think it was the sort of big hit that causes people to port it, sadly enough.  And porting from the PS2 to the PC is a much bigger undertaking than porting from the Xbox to the PC, so it would really be a major undertaking.  It's a shame, I know most people on this board have never played it because they don't have a PS2, and they just don't know what they're missing.

Having just finished this game, I would comment that the 20 disc video does tell a story in English, but one should be able to follow the cartoon with out the narrative.
I played Comer without any sound, and as I remember, there is nothing to read, so this would fit.

.

It's a pure action-adventure platformer in full 3D but Rayman 2 by UbiSoft has all the dialog done in total gibberish. However, the voice work and character animations are so funny and so emotive that you instinctively understand (basically) what they are saying.

Cheers,  Terry

Well, the English subtitles help, too.
Good game, though.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

I was hoping there were more adventure games with no dialogues/written clues, there are so few games translated in portuguese... :-/

What about the Gobliiins series? Anyone remember that one? I just played the first for a few moments, and it seemed to feature no dialogues at all.

Anyone remember the other Goblins games?

I'm pretty sure Gobliiins could be finished without any reading. I don't remember Gobliins 2 in enough detail to say for sure, though you'd definitely be in for some serious "try every item on the character" episodes if you couldn't read what they were demanding. Goblins 3, forget it. The puzzles are insanely hard in the first place, and a brief bit of dialogue, or even a short comment by the main character when you look at an object, is frequently your only clue.

I see...only Goblins 1 really has no written text then.

So...anymore games without text or dialogue out there? ???

I can think of one - Curse of Enchantia. But man, that game really was a mixed bag. Great graphics for the time, but considering you often had no idea what the item was you just picked up, and you had like 30 "verbs" (icons) to use, it was basically a "Try everything on everything" approach.

But for whoever the game is... pretty much everyone I know who speaks portuguese also speaks spanish, and there are quite a few adventures translated to spanish.

I'd expect most puzzle/adventures wouldn't require too many reading to play...

What about the original Myst? The books that you find throughout the game are required to solve the puzzles?

Any puzzle/games that feature texts in english that are not required to solve the puzzles? Texts that only enhance the game with background stories of the characters, for example?

I'm fairly certain that Myst can't be solved at all without a few hints from books and notes lying around.
