Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

Hey, insulting people's favourite games is finally paying off!
Maybe I should give it another go (haven't touched it since), it just seemed to be a load of puzzles with absolutely no context to them. And are there even any other characters?

Of course there are: you merely have to wait for your character to pick up "multiple personalities disorder", and that will give you other characters to talk to. Failing that, I am afraid there will be nobody else on the island to talk to. It wouldn't be Myst otherwise; Myst games must live up to their reputation!
Well, I guess it's time for me to get out of the lurking mode, for the time being at least. Though I have registed a few months ago, I haven't exactly been active since then, and was content with lurking. Problem is, lurking can be quite dangerous: every time you try to leave your little hiding place, someone almost steps on you, before realising that you are... most of the time at least.
So, I am 18-year-old, an English student (perhaps the only course of study where you can actually consider that playing games is work), who currently happens to live in France. My favourite adventure games are usually story-driven: Longest Journey, Discworld Noir, Sanitarium, or A Mind Forever Voyaging rather than the aforementioned Myst (I really don't have anything against Myst. Honest!). And Little Big Adventure (AKA Twisen's Odyssey), can't forget about that one.
Other interests include, but are not limited to: role-playing, miscellaneous computer games, like Operation Flashpoint, Thief or Capitalism (no obvious connection between the three), and making obscure sentences... or whole posts, if you're out of luck. Deciding whether this particular post falls under "obscure, intricate, mind-boggling, migraine-triggering post" (tick the one that best applies) is left as an exercice to the reader.

Besides, a declaration of war on the grounds of "Speaking Unfairly of the Masterpiece, Debasing the Name of the Eighth Wonder of the World, Plotting the Demise of the One Game, and Assorted Offences to Myst" should be interesting to read. And of course, wars are always helpful if you need a pretext to launch a few invasions, here and there.
Chris: I am definitively sure on both grounds. I am not actually studying English, but I would never reveal that I am an undercover agent so easily. I mean, I have to keep my façade up, and secrecy is part of my everyday's routine. And I am sure I am 18 and not 19: the 19th birthday is the exact milestone for "loss of neurons" (from now on at least). Since I have no problem with my memory, I am definitively under 19. What was the question again though?
Oh, and the reason I have nothing against Myst is diplomacy; or, in other words, not appearing as the offender, hence allowing me to play the martyr if/when Myst enthusiasts come asking for my blood. But hush! Such things are better kept secret.

This little scouser stranded in sunny Oz does so enjoy the pommy wit.
So, apart from moonlighting as a secret agent (I've been known to indulge in the odd spot of espionage myself in fact), what and where are you studying in France?
Chris, in Riven your mission is to capture Ghen and free Catherine but in fact he captures you first. No, it's not The Longest [s]Conversation[/s] er.... Journey, but it is superb for its beauty. Follow Anne's advice and get a walkthrough because it sounds like you're not really into puzzles and isolation. Also, try Syberia 1 & 2. They are lovely games with character interaction and terrific graphics.
And while I'll never be 18 or even 19 again, I do in fact know my exact age ~ for the time being at any rate. :

Status : Online | See what I told you about obscure sentences, or phrases at the very least? "English student" did not refer to my nationality, but to the subject I was studying. So, I would be a "French English student"... erh, a "Frenchman studying English". Voilà, that should be clearer. I hope.
So, I'm afraid to report that the population of "young English blokes in one week" has dwindled, and is down to a single person. Apologies in order for creating a dream and then unashamedly popping it; if you have any confession to make Chris, now would be a good time. Your fate might be just a little painful should *they* stumble to your secrets... but perhaps it *is* what you have been planning all along. Plots within plots...
Nothing like a good dose of healthy paranoia to start a day on the right foot.

And a bit older than 19.
And female.
My true identity is Madeleine Buthane, an agent of the Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieure. My mission is to masquerade as a young English man to lure the ros-bifs into a false sense of security, thus revealing the location of the Holy Grail.
Zut alors!
