I never really got deep into adventure games until I was about 15, when I first exposed myself to Myst. Two months, six games, five sheets of paper, and one pen later, I became a dyed-in-the-wool first person adventure game fan. I recently got my friend Ian into the Myst series too, and we're want to try and make an amateur adventure game while we're in college. Besides gaming (and shooters especially), I play trombone semi-professionally and get involved in local politics.

But I simply love your description of your journey through Myst Shadsy.... yes, impossible not to make copious notes, drawings etc. So, have you played any other games in the Myst series? Wonderful games aren't they? You need to find Obsidian. And buy a BIG notepad.....
And somewhere on this site there will be a list of other games that have the same qualities and strive for the same atmosphere as Myst. You have quite a few enjoyable experiences to look forward to.

And yeah, I got through all six (including Uru). It was really convenient because I got into Myst 1 two months before Myst 5 came out, so by the time I had finished Uru Complete Chronicles, I had another game to go onto.

Stuff about me: I live in Manchester in the UK. I am an office worker, have been for the last 7 years, but that's all ending in 2.5 days. I decided to give it all in to follow some dreams (was thinking of doing video game design at the local uni). Other stuff - I like dogs, dancing and expensive coffee. I am a massive Silent Hill fan... massive. Some of my favourite adventure games are Simon the Sorcerer (all of 'em, love the humour), Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, the Ben Jordan series (over on the AGS site). Would '9' count as an adventure game? Does anybody remember it? Well, it was buggy as anything but beautiful to look at.
I like other things but I don't want to waffle on about stuff I like forever. But it's nice to be here, hello to you all and I'm off to join in on some threads since I've nothing to do at work right now.
There was a sig here...&&It's gone now

Status : Online | Hi, I've been posting like there's no tomorrow on here and I haven't yet introduced myself. How rude of me. I'm an adwriter/voiceover guy living in Richmond, Virginia in the United States. I'm pretty much chained to my computer all day, so you'd think I would be sick of dealing with it and wouldn't play any games on it at all, but when the weather's nasty, I find myself playing games rather than doing anything related to the out of doors. I live alone, but I have a queen sized bed because someone else used to sleep in it with me. The void that was left has been filled by stacks of books, manuscripts, notebooks, journals, and power tools, all of which reside on my bed with me (aside from the power tools). In the time I spend not writing, speaking, or playing games, I enjoy working on and riding motorcycles and fixing up old cars. I also read quite a bit. I watch movies when people come over, and I have a lot of friends in the artistic community here who often grace me with their company. I'm an avid bicyclist during the fall and spring, and I often take up working with a contractor during the summer because a) I enjoy physical labor and b) the summer months aren't too good for ad writing, for some reason. I'm already in love with this forum and I hope to be both helpful and amusing to other members.

Status : Online | Hi, a former adventure game lover here, wishing to rekindle the flames of bafflement.
I've just rediscovered adventures after being away from them for a few years now, largely because of the vacuum that was left after the time of Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey. Reading through a few reviews, it looks like I've missed some good 'uns!
I'd like to offer a friendly [smiley=hi_five.gif] to all other adventure lovers out there. There's actually a forum for these sorts of things? Who knew? I should be around pretty often since with the exception of Half-Life and its various offspring, adventures are the only games I play these days.
(If you'd like to know how I first came to be a fan, read on...)
Myst came along with my first computer. Of course it confused me to the extent of my not being able to leave the main island, although I thought the music and sounds were nice. Where was all the stuff to shoot? What was I meant to be doing? So I got bored and it got put back into its box, and that's where it stayed, along with its notebook covered in mysterious symbols.
Then, several years later, a friend led me to a second-hand shop to look for music CDs. What did I see but a bunch of games on sale on a rickety shelf in a corner? King's Quest VIII - £6. I loved every minute, from its quirky graphics and clunky movement to its eccentric wandering camera. It was the first time I had played a game and realized that a decent story, the creation of a particular mood and of a believable location were in combination far more important than "doing lots of stuff" - like killing the same characterless alien drone for the 300th time in an ordinary game. Cutscenes weren't just there to provide a big entrance for the next enemy; they actually moved the game along. Plus whoever did the voice for the main character deserves some sort of award for his wonderfully overblown "medieval" (?) vocal style.
Later I went back to play Myst and cheated like a trooper but then, older if not necessarily wiser, the seeds of my affection for adventures were sown.

Thanks for the welcome! Your country is almost unfairly pleasant, you lot should ship all that spare sunlight over here...
Heh, yeah after a while in GF you just get used to "bouncing" off walls and running in completely the wrong direction. It was the quality of the script and the gorgeous visuals that made me stick with it.
About to make a start on Grand Inquisitor and Nemesis, which have been useless until just recently when I discovered those ingenious XP compatibility guide websites. Getting them to work is like adding a whole new puzzle to the games

And I do live in an terrific place where the sky is big and blue and empty about 9 months of the year. But I emigrated here from Liverpool so I deserve my good fortune. I visited the motherland last year - just when the place was being flooded in fact. It's very green isn't it.... lime green.

Adventure wise I'm a Sierra Online nut. Not was either, I still play them all the time. My favs include Police Quest 2, Space Quest 3, Gabriel Knight 2 and Quest for Glory 3.
Recently I finished Overlocked and I just started Scratches.
I'm also a big fan of other genres (RPGs, Shooters, Action, Puzzle games).

Status : Online | Hi At urging from Caroline, who hails from the exact same part of the world as me, believe it or not, I'm here to introduce myself. My name is Chantal, I'm 18, from Adelaide, Australia and I'm absolutely flabbergasted that Sierra rereleased almost all their series EXCEPT Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory, which I personally find to be far superior to any of the other collections. I've been gaming since I was 5 years old, encouraged by an amused uncle and grandfather who thought it adorable to see a five year old girl playing video games. Since age 6 or so I've been heavily addicted to adventure games - I really was raised by Sierra, in many ways. An interesting gaming fact is that I was an absolutely spoiled little brat, and I recieved 1 adventure game a week for years. My uncle was the generous person, and yes, every week he'd go on a hunt to find me a new adventure game I could play. Because of this I'm rather well versed in them I suppose, but lately I've been astounded to see exactly how many adventure games I seem to have missed, both new and old. Astounded, but definitely happy! I have all these new games to play
In addition to being an addicted little gamer, I love to write, draw and read. Anything horror-themed appeals to me in the largest of ways. I'm a cat person, and I'm very glad this community is here, and it's nice to meet you

I'm wondering where your uncle found all those games for you. I used to scour the shops, mostly Berlin Wall and the big stores in Rundle Mall pestering them for 'more games like Myst'. But other Aussies on this forum put me onto gameswarehouse in Sydney and that did very nicely until I discovered the addictive joys of ebay.

I am likewise shocked, Chantal (a name, which, sadly, you don't hear much at all in English Canada. ); I would have assumed Quest for Glory would be re-released along with all the others. Fortunately for me I bought my copy of the collection several years ago.
Gabriel Knight being excluded surprises me far less, as it never did to my knowledge have an original-run "collection" re-release (and Sierra don't care one iota about their old games save what they can milk, I imagine), and so laziness likely won out. Still, even though Quest for Glory IV is my favourite Sierra game, I would agree that Gabriel and Grace not getting their own re-release is the greatest shame, as they are of extremely high and (most impressive of all) consistent quality.
In any case, even though I've not been here long myself, welcome. It's always nice to have new, intelligent people around, especially if they have pretty French names which remind me my old stomping grounds.

Caroline, I'm not absolutely positive as to where he would go to get them, but I do recall him taking me to GameTraders a few times and finding AMAZING amounts of older, hard-to-find adventure games there (mostly used copies, but I'm sure most of us here know that that has no bearing on anything) and also a local, small place in my area that I can't remember the name of and has since been shut down. Apart from those I'm pretty sure he went on trips to Marion a lot and checked out Electronics Boutique (as it was known then) and David Jones. Harvey Norman had quite a selection also.
GameTraders used to be very, very amazing, I miss the way it used to be a lot. Nowadays they seem like an EB Games clone, but with slightly more reasonable prices (and at this point can I mention how deliriously happy I am that other game stores opened up at Marion Shopping Centre, so that EB Games no longer has an evil dictatorship over the ridiculous prices of video games?).
JKing, I'm also fortunate in that I owned all the original "collections", however some of those discs have been lost over the years so I was hoping to replace them with an easy trip to the mall. It's horrible that I have so much animosity towards a company that was formerly my favourite beyond all favourites, but I think we'll all agree we can't really call them the same company anymore. Sad sad sad I'm immensely looking forward to Jane Jensen's new game, as are we all, I'm sure.
