I got a check from someone today and the number on it was 564.  I looked at my checkbook and I started at 3000.  Is the one I got even legit?  Good thing it's for $12 and not, say, $120.

.

Can't recall the first pre-printed U.S. bank check number in sequence for the last new account I opened but think it was 1001. I know the numbers don't start at 001 or 0001 because the bank issues temporary checks with a blank field for numbers to use while your first order is being processed and printed. This is true of regular checking (personal or business), savings draw / debit / overdraft accounts and for interest earning investor accounts.

In any case, why not just deposit the check and see if it clears?

Cheers,  Terry

That's my plan.  Even if it doesn't, it was still less of a hassle to get rid of that book than putting it up for sale on eBay or half.com, where it would have sold for much less - if at all.

Checks can start with #001, but why look like you have a brand new account?

My check book started at 001.  And now it's up to around 5,500.  You can request that the bank start them at a higher number, but it can still bounce no matter what the number is!

My regular checking account started at 001 and is currently at check 744.  I also have an account with a small amount in it that I use for Pay Pal transfers, and that one is only up to 133.  It really doesn't matter as long as the check clears.

Whew!  Good to know.  Somehow I got it in my head that people look at you suspiciously if you have a check w/ a low number (as I just did).

I remember from my days working as a Sales Associate that we weren't allowed to take the unnumbered ones no matter how temporary they were.  One woman was NOT happy.  Having just opened up a checking account a few months before, I sympathized with her.  But being a lowly sales associate, there wasn't much I could do.  That and I think I had previously taken some type of check I wasn't supposed to when I first started working there, was told never to do it again, and didn't want to get in trouble a second time.

It always amazes me how Americans still use cheque books (note the proper spelling guys
).  So do you have to pay stamp duty on them like we do?

Running a personal cheque account in Oz is loaded with fees - cheaper to use Visa.

I just know you're going to write back and say 'what fees?'   :-/

What fees?  My checking account even earns interest, and they print the checks for free.  My bank is also open on Sundays.

Just about every bank I used in the States had no-fee checking (pffpfphbphft to you Caroline
). I moved to Canada, and the only no-fee checking we could get is through an internet bank. Kinda scary when your local branch is a single ATM.
