Can't recall the first pre-printed U.S. bank check number in sequence for the last new account I opened but think it was 1001. I know the numbers don't start at 001 or 0001 because the bank issues temporary checks with a blank field for numbers to use while your first order is being processed and printed. This is true of regular checking (personal or business), savings draw / debit / overdraft accounts and for interest earning investor accounts.
In any case, why not just deposit the check and see if it clears?
Cheers, Terry

I remember from my days working as a Sales Associate that we weren't allowed to take the unnumbered ones no matter how temporary they were. One woman was NOT happy. Having just opened up a checking account a few months before, I sympathized with her. But being a lowly sales associate, there wasn't much I could do. That and I think I had previously taken some type of check I wasn't supposed to when I first started working there, was told never to do it again, and didn't want to get in trouble a second time.

Running a personal cheque account in Oz is loaded with fees - cheaper to use Visa.
I just know you're going to write back and say 'what fees?' :-/
