Hi,
I'm a 3rd year classical animation student considering taking a post-graduate course in 3D animation for games.  My dream company to work for right now would be UBISOFT wich happens to be in Canada, my country of birth.

Can someone in the gaming industry give me an honest appraisal about whether it is worth focusing my animation on the gaming industry (as opposed to film and TV).  Are there lots of jobs?  What kind of pay/hours can I expect?

Cheers,
Daniel

This is the wrong forum to ask that question. Go to the URL below and do some research.

Daniel, whichever industry you decide to concentrate on, it's going to be difficult to break into without a strong portfolio.

You should also look at the game recruitment agencies to see what the current requirements are for game animators.

Deleted UserIgnore Kori, Overcome, you can ask that question here!

I've done some gamework (not as much as the above) but what Steve says is true about ANY industry. You need a strong portfolio of work to back you up. As for recruitment agencies - be VERY wary about them and remember to push yourself forward and pester them should a position you're interested in comes up.

Your best bet (as my girlfriend and I found out in our respective industries) is ring around, be confident and talk to developers directly. If you act polite and professional and have the work to back you up then you'll go far. Just be persistent.

Try to join this forum (I'll back you up if needs be) -

You'll find tons of help from animators from Ubi to Disney. Good luck!

If you are looking at 3D art try this forum.

I like to lurk there as the art is spectacular. (can't draw myself)

Hi,
First off I think my question was completely appropriate to this area of the forum.  But thanks for the link to Gamasutra.  I had seen that site previously and was looking for it again.  I will do research there.

THanks for the other links and info as well.  Animationnation looks like a great site for me to get inside information.

Having read some of that site, I am starting to be more attracted towards moving my studies into gaming.  I don't really want to have a career doing seasonal, lowpaying animated commercials and saturday morning product pitches "cartoons" for toy companies like Mattel and Hasbro etc . .   THere seems to be a lot of anymosity towards the management and business spinsters in the animation industry from the animators.  Probably for good reason.

Sounds like most game companies value their employees more and sometimes listen to their creative imput.  Plus most game companies are smaller than most media companies.  And gaming has so much untapped potential right now.  I see a future in gaming where A-list actors and blockbuster budgets are used for unprecedented immersion and realism.

Deleted User... that's what you'd like to think. Believe me when I say the games industry is possibly more guilty (at least in the UK) of corporate despotism than the major animation studios (bear in mind a lot of them are ex-Disney types with axes to grind after being laid off unfairly). It's getting better, games studio developers are more interested in actual artists and writers nowadays - it's just someone forgot to tell the rest of the staff, or "suits".

Either way, there's dark patches of weed in the shallows. Just make sure you swim in clear areas and try not to pee in your own water.

???

I'm sure there's something salvagable in that last comment, but I've no idea what.

Happy hunting!
