OK...got Post Mortem for Christmas. I have 520 MB of free hard disk space. The side of the box says you need only 400 MB, and the installation says you need 470 (minimum). Either way, I have enough. Well, apparently I don't have enough. Every time I try to do the minimum install, it says I need to free up some hard disk space because I don't have enough...but I do!!!! I have freed more space, but I still get the message. How do I fix this problem? I can't delete things anymore! Is there any way I can get around that part of the installation? It is obviously an error, because I DO have enough space...
Thanks.
-Michael is this ALL your hd free space? if so how much is reserved for the swap file? it might be the case that the game needs more hd space for that... that was just a guess though, could be smth totally different
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I forgot my sig.

You'd probably need at least 100Mb or more extra to install the game. I recommend that you uninstall some program or game that you are not using at the moment to free up space. Or delete temporary internet files from your cache. That may free up space.
And after doing all that a scandisk and defrag is not a bad idea to get your computer at its most efficient for game install.

I now have 652 MB of free hard disk space, and the game STILL WON'T INSTALL. I have been playing games on this computer for over ten years, and I have NEVER needed more disk space than the side of the box said was required.
I have the 400 MB of space, plus an additional 252 MB. It should work. I am beginning to think their really is no minimum installation and you have to choose either the medium or full installation, which requires at least 710 MB. I can't afford to delete anything else on my computer.

I never had any problems with either one - no installation problems, no graphical problems, no sound problems, nothing! So, if anyone is having problems with either of these titles, there must be a problem with your computer. These games are far from buggy.

It's quite usual that Windows programs require more space (sometimes considerably more) during installation. True as well - Some installations can require nearly twice the amount of published space. These programs copy the packed files to your TEMP directory prior to installing the software.
There may be some files lurking around on your drive that you're unaware of that can be safely deleted.
1.) Purge your Internet History. (from your browser) 2.) Locate and delete the IE index.dat file - assuming you run IE (this is a hidden file that is not deleted when the Internet History is purged. It records every URL you've ever been to and "always" grows, "never" shrinks. It's also not uncommon for it to consume 100 megs or more.
3.) Delete your Swap file (assuming that you allow Windows to manage it's size, and don't specify one yourself) - This file also has a tendency to "always" grow. (If your swap file seems unusually large - post back... There's an INI "Hack" that will keep it's size much smaller.
There are several free utilities available that will locate and delete these files if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself. You'd be surprised just how much space they can free up.

To save typing here's a link to deleting the swap file for win 95/98/me.
http://howto.lycos.com/lycos/step/1,,26111+25175+3965,00.html
Should be safe to delete, it will be recreated at startup but it will be smaller.
Here is another link. Look for Conservative swapfile or tip number 8 in this link and follow the instructions,

x:\Windows\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IEx
It's a hidden file, and requires that your Folder Options include the Show All Files setting. The best way to delete the file when running Win-ME - is from the DOS prompt. Which, unfortunately requires a Boot Disk (ME DOS support leaves a bit to be desired).
Most folks are unaware the file exists (because of its Hidden Attribute) - trust me, it can grow quite large.
