Hi, everybody. Can anyone recommend some games for the Playstation 2 that an adventure game fan might enjoy? I know there are probably no "pure adventure" games for the PS2, but I've played a few that I liked. I'm not looking for complicated role-playing games like the Final Fantasy series, more action/adventure type games with more emphasis on the adventure, the more immersive the better. I really don't like a lot of heavy combat, although a little bit is OK. Here are a few PS2 games I've already played and my commments on them:

ICO - By far my favorite PS2 game. Wonderful graphics and very immersive. I really liked the whole "physical puzzle" aspect with the running and jumping. The combat was minimal which is good.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Really liked this one a lot too. Very similar to ICO, but with more difficult combat. That part I didn't like so much, but I managed to get through it. I'm considering checking out the sequel, but it appears to be more action-oriented, unfortunately. Has anyone out there played the new one?

Silent Hill 1-3 - I thought these were OK. I enjoyed the first two more than the third. By SH3, the gameplay had become a bit redundant. Too much combat as well. I enjoyed the creeping around aspect though. I haven't played part 4 yet, but I fear it will just be more of the same. Any opinions on the new one?

Shadow of Destiny - By far the most adventurish PS2 game I've played. The story was a bit lame and relied too much on cut scenes, but I did enjoy this one. Would like to find more like it.

Clock Tower 3 - Didn't like this one much at all. Hated the boss battles. Graphics were good though.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - I liked a lot about this one. The stealth aspect was fun, but military-themed games with the weapons/action emphasis aren't really my thing. Took a really long time to play as well. The new one "Snake Eater" looks like more of the same. Any opinions?

I think that's all I've played so far. A few I'm considering checking out are the Fatal Frame series. Looks nice and dark without much combat. I still have yet to check out the Grand Theft Auto series. Looks like quite a commitment though. Another one that looks intriguing is Manhunt. I've heard mixed things about it. It's supposed to be extremely violent and genuinely scary which could be good or bad. I like the idea of combining MSG-style stealth with survival horror, but I've heard the action gets very monotonous. Has anyone played this one? How about the other ones I just mentioned?

to begin with, stay away from silent hill 4... it's the least "adventurish" of all - it's almost pure action... if you want to try a good survival horror game, play fatal frame 2 - one of the best games i ever played, highly recommended... for smth more adventure, you could give echo night: beyond a try, esp if you like sci-fi horror, but keep in mind it becomes kinda repetitive - i suggest you either rent it or buy it used or smth

"Escape from Monkey Island" is a good pure adventure for PS2.  In fact, I had to play it on my daughter's PS2 because I'm too impatient to learn all the keyboard controls to play it on my pc

My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

Sorry I can offer much help but the one console game series that seems to get the highest overall praise and appears to come closest to a real adventure is Zelda. Unfortunately, it is an exclusive Nintendo franchise that requires their video system/s.

If you also have access to an old N64 or a newer Gamecube, that series would be my first recommendation. If not, then try searching for any Zelda-like titles on the PS2 and see what pops up.

Cheers,  Terry

P.S.

Another really fun, very well made series of action adventure platformers (in full 3D) that is available on the PS2 as well as PCs and other video consoles is Rayman from Ubisoft. I have only played Rayman 2 for the PC but understand that it is essentially the same as the console versions - especially if you use a good gamepad. I have also read many good reviews and player comments about the first and third games in the series.

It is a very clever, wonderfully fun and funny game concept full of delightful physical puzzles and memorable characters. Rayman 2 is also a very large SP game that is sure to tickle your funny bone while offering enough challenges to give it an edge.

Beyond Good and Evil is probably the closest Zelda like game on the PS2.

Zelda games rock, but like Terry says they are Nintendo only.

There is a semi sequel to ICO due out next year someting to do with giant machines crossing the land that you have to stop.

Whether it will capture the feeling of ICO ever again is yet to be seen.

You could try Necronomicon, a PS1 point n click adventure game - it should also run on a PS2.

I should confess, however, that I only played it for a while before getting tired of it.

Here's the JAVE entry:

Thanks for the recommendation. Have you played Fatal Frame 1 as well? Would you recommend 2 over 1?

Fatal Frame 1 - 2 - A+

Clock Tower 1 - 3 - B+

Echo Night 1 and 2 - B

Deleted UserThere is also Broken Sword 3 and Syberia 2 for the PS2 out there for nice price already.

There is one series I can recommend to every pure adventure lover but it requires a Dreamcast, the 2nd part came out for the X-Box, too. Shenmue 1 and 2 - They are just fantastic! Sadly the 3rd and final part that concludes the story is still in oblivion...

IMO, Fatal Frame 1 is scary as hell! I was even screaming when I played it during the day.

You should check out Resident Evil Code Veronica X if you're OK with survival horror, and Dark Cloud 2 if you want something Zelda-like.

I'm gathering my courage to buy it
. First I have to finish off some other games but ff2 is in my list!

Play it at night!
The last game I did that was SH3....half way
. Then I got butterflies in my stomach. No more switching off the lights and playing survival horror games at night.... Oh but what the heck. No ghost is joining me by my side.

you have to play survival horror at night, and with earphones on! sh3 was very good and scary (regardless what several ppl who don't like controlling a teenage girl say!
)... but fatal frame 2 is beyond anything you've experienced! just wait until you confront the twins! [smiley=skull_laugh.gif]

"i don't want to kill you" (still hasn't left my mind!

I definitely recommend both and like the third game in the series, they too were released for the Playstation.

Here is a quick overview of the first game BS: Circle of Blood for the PS from 1996:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/p,6/gameId,499/

And here's one for the second game BS: The Smoking Mirror for the PS from 1997:

I assume since the PS2 was designed to also play PS1 titles, they should still work on the newer console system.

Cheers,  Terry

P.S.

Evidently, this forum software has trouble accepting full URLs from some other sites. So disregard the database error message you get from the above links and just go to:

http://www.mobygames.com/

Then type in Broken Sword in the little search window, hit Enter and you will get links to overviews of every version of all three games in the series.

i'd say, unless you only have a ps2, get the broken swords on pc... much better controlling the cursor with a mouse!

Thanks for the replies, everybody! I usually just rent games at Blockbuster. Sometimes I buy them on eBay when I can find them for less than a rental price (requires lots of patience!) and then resell them after I play them and actually make a profit! Anyway, someone got me one of those Blockbuster gift cards, so I'll be heading there on my vacation and go on a big gaming binge. I think I'll start out with Fatal Frame 2 and then try out part 1 if I like it enough. I love well-crafted scary games. I might try out this other one I mentioned called Manhunt just because there's so much controversy surrounding it. It's been called the sickest game ever created so I might be able to appreciate it on that level even if it's as redundant as some have criticized it as being. Will have to check out Monkey Island as well. I've been meaning to try that one, although "wacky" games aren't really my thing. One more question though... Can anyone name any other good actobatic running and jumping games like ICO and Prince of Persia? I really liked that aspect of those games. Those puzzles where you have to figure out how to physically get from here to there and time it just right and stuff.
