Status : Online | At my house, we only have 1 working computer at the moment. Everybody uses it.
My father, my mother and one of my brothers rarely uses it. They have their own files and folders, and they are mostly well organized, they usually delete their own files when they stop using them. I also try to be organized, and I am the only one who remembers to frequently scan for viruses and spyware, and I am also the only one worried about the "virtual cleaning" of the harddrive.
My other brother, on the other hand, is responsible for more than half of all the uselles files, junk and programs that no one uses (not even him).
He's very messy in real life, and his computer files are no different. He likes to download old movies and old radio plays for example. He is also a musician, so there's lots of different utilities to edit his musics. He also likes to create animations. So there's always a new animation studio utilitie and photo editing program installed.
The problem is that after he stops using this files, he doesn't delete them. This is too bad because we only have 40 GB of hard disk space as a whole.
Today I found the ultimate trash file. A 4GB movie file of the oldie "George Melies" movie, Voyage dans La Lune (great short movie, by the way). The problem? The file does NOT work, it is probably a fake, and, even worse, he alreay had, in the SAME folder, another smaller file (57 MB) that DID work, but he didn't delete the other file.
I asked him about the huge useless file, but he had no idea when he downloaded that. I also asked why he didn't delete the file since it doesn't wokr, but he had nothing to say (probably because he knows I already know the answer: because he's too messy and unorganized to care about it).
This is certainly the largest trash file I ever found in my computer (I was the only one with enough cash to buy this computer, by the way. Computers are really expensive around here). We share everything here at my home. But he usually has nothing to share himself, and often he messes with my books, my cd's, my comics, my DVD's, etc.
On a positive note, trying to live with him has certainly improved my patience over the years.
What about you? Do you also have to share your computer with messy relatives/friends?

And BTW, we don't share a computer, but I share a house with two very messy friends so I know what you are talking about, though in a different way.
Feel free to ignore this post.

But the worst was before he moved and spent more time than me at my PC, especially late at night when I wanted to go to bed/play my own games. And he complained that I used it for silly old games(like the early Sierra/LucasArts games)....he laughed at King Graham >
And don't make me mention the time he took my Play Station with him to Copenhagen, broke it at and left it at some friends of his..grrr ...mumble..grumble.... >

Failing that try electrocuting the keyboard DJ - that'll put them off using your computer when you're not there.

We have XP, but only one user account is setup. This is partially because I'm the main user and partially because another one is not needed. This way everything can be found or used by whoever is on the computer at the moment. I also check the "family" e-mail account and alert my mom or dad when they have e-mail from a friend or relative.
The only time it's not me using the computer is when one of my parents is replying to an e-mail they received, or my dad needs it to do something.

Thanks Kareman and Dom, I think I might try that. I never used different accounts before.
In any case, I still have to clean after my older brother's "virtual mess"...

In this case, my younger brother owns a Playstation. My older (and messy) brother lend the videogame to his friends (WITHOUT asking for permission). I end up learning, by a friend's friend, that they broken the console, that's why they took so long to bring it back.
Good thing though they at least paid for the fixing. My younger brother never learned about this incident. And I am not going to tell him just yet...he got really angry JUST BECAUSE my older brother lended the videogame in the first place...

I bet you never left a 4GB useless junk file at your computer...

| Deleted User | I am chuckling to myself because this reminds me of my older brother stealing my Beatles "Help" album when he was left alone in the house while the rest of us went on vacation.
He obviously had a big party while we were gone because my "Help" album was replaced with the "Seeds", a minor band that wasn't very good.
Same thing. Siblings taking things. 

That is what we do, but it doesn't solve the problem of the hard drive being cluttered. Unfortunately, you will probably have to continue what you're doing and be responsible for the "housekeeping" on your pc. I am currently only sharing my pc with my daughter, but I received word that Santa Claus is bringing her a new one for Christmas!
Don't worry, though. When you one day get your own pc and don't have to share, you'll appreciate it so much more!

But it's my younger brother who owns most of the music cds... So he is the one who needs to worry the most

My husband and I started out by sharing a Mac laptop that I would carry back and forth to work every day. When I discovered adventure games, he knew he'd never get to use the machine unless he begged, so we got a blueberry iMac. When my sister, who lives with us, discovered games, we upgraded, and she got the blueberry. When a dear friend of ours died, my husband inherited a year-old 17" screen iMac. Now we all have our own computers, and it's simply heavenly. [smiley=angel_smiley.gif]
