I adored the original game but have only played the sequel's demo so far. Did buy a copy of Syberia 2 not long after it came out though and have it right here atop my nearest pile of unplayed PC games. So it's good to hear another positive impression - thanks.
Cheers, Terry

Still, rather nice game, but not one I'll remember in a few years.

She's pushed backwards and not forwards. It seems like she's doing it to spite everyone, and not because it has a real purpose. They have even added villians to the game to give Kate more trouble. You lose the sense of adventure from the first game, which was what made Kate jump on the train in the end... Like Parrot said, it's like it's all for Hans and not for her. She doesn't even get excited at all the places she gets to.

The second one was OK, but not spectacular. (too much running backwards and forwards through empty but georgous screens.)
Also hated the ending of both games (although Syberia 1 doesn't really have an ending as such) I was disappointed by Syberia 2.

Status : Offline | Well, speaking as a "Mystite", the quality of the puzzles in Syberia 2 wasn't the problem. I didn't play either of the Syberia games for the puzzles. For me, Syberia 2 just didn't have the heart Syberia 1 had.
Syberia 1 was an unusual and unique adventure game for me. I mean, looking at it on the surface, there's no reason the game should have connected with me -- it had nearly none of things I usually look for in an adventure game.
And yet as I played through Syberia 1, I slowly but surely found myself being won over by the charm of the game, its beauty and its exquisite sense of style. All the while my inner logician was grumbling and complaining and wondering what was happening to me, my increasingly enthralled romanticist side was winning the struggle between the two. And by the time the game was over, I had forgotten my complaints at the start and my only thought was: "I want to see mammoths"!
So I eagerly looked forward to Syberia 2, not for better puzzles, but to see the same kind of magic the first game had. Well, as I played through Syberia 2, it became apparent something was wrong. The spark, the magic, the connection the first game had made with me wasn't there. I can't really explain it, but the game felt flat and lifeless compared to the first. Oh, a few times it almost connected in the same way Syberia 1 did, but the moment passed quickly and I was left disappointed again.

Interesting. There seems to be a 100% consensus that the sequel simply was not as good as the original. This has been true of every single player comment on every forum and every review I have read to date. There are widely varying degrees of disappointment though from very very minor to huge. But virutally all agree that S1 was just better than S2.
Nevertheless, I still bought the sequel and plan to play it with an open mind. If it does nothing more than extend what I saw in the demo and provide a reasonable ending to Kate's saga, I'll be pleased.
Cheers, Terry

Are you kidding? I counted 9 screens that I had to go back and forth in the second game, at least 4 times in order to complete a puzzle! And one time you had to go through 11 screens and back.
The yukol village was so badly designed! and the yukols...so annoying...
I didn't mind all the walking back and forth in the first village, because I knew where I was going and it was only a few screens away.
But 9 screens in that circular village is too much!

Status : Online | I was fortunate to play both games, for the first time, back to back, so it was like one long game. I usually love 1st Peson games, and not 3rd person games, but Syberia had so much press written about it, I had to try it. Well, something about Syberia 1 drew me in completely, as others have stated. I can't put my finger on it, but it was something magical. Syberia 1 was the first game in YEARS that has left me wanting to get home from work and not even eat dinner, but jump right in and play. I was even thinking about the game while riding the train to work. However, even though the sequel was excellent, it didn't have that special "something" that others have also mentioned. Maybe its just impossible for ANY sequal to live up to the original.

I agree about the Monkey Island adventures and think that many sequels have improved on the original games. I loved both Fallout and Baldur's Gate but F2 and BG2 were even bigger and better. Same goes for Warcraft 2, System Shock 2, Civilization 2, Rayman 2 and The Little Big Adventure 2 (a.k.a Twinsen's Odyssey). To a lesser extent, I liked Gabriel Knight 2 and 3, The Journeyman Project 2 & 3, Icewind Dale 2, Gothic 2 and Thief 2 as well as or more than the first games.
Cheers, Terry

I haven't played 2 yet, but by the reviews, I believe the problem is merely that it was more of the same. Those automatons may be cool, but you're no longer intrigued by them. Games that are continuing past stories tend to work becuase they may play the same, and have the same atmosphere, but the story needs to take a left field turn in order to keep people interested.  King's Quest VI amd Zork:Nemesis come to mind). The only time you can get away with the exact same story style is when the actual gameplay interface changes completely. (Day of the Tentacle and Broken Sword 3 are examples).

I posted this topic because I thought S2 was getting a bad rap. Judging by this thread, I think most of the criticisms are fair and not too harsh. The game is stunning and beautiful, even moving. Kate's face at the end is one of the most beautiful I've seen in a game. The ending is poignant, not knock-your-socks off. If it is what you expected, then it was true to the integrity of the plot and characters (which Oscar was not!!).
Yup, flaw in design and puzzling, but as I said, that is not why I bought the game. If I want puzzles, I do the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. The beauty of S2 blew me away (except for the stupid dog-thing). I thought the death scene was marvelous!!
Thanks for posting here. I hope those who haven't played the game won't shy away. Play it, then wait for Longest Journey 2 to fulfill all your needs.
