Well - my order 'seemed' to submit OK.

However - I e-mailed to ask about shipping - and the address comes back as
'-access denied. This is a permanent error'.

Do you have en e-mail address  for them?
I wondered if they'd gone out of business?

Sorry, I don't have their e-mail address, but as of two or three weeks ago they were still in business -- that's when my order arrived.

When I saw this thread, I thought: "That's just how I felt when I walked into Babbages this weekend."

Oh my gosh, console games in every corner and  on every wall of the store. PC games given one small stand on which I only saw about 10 adventure games-most  of which were several years old.

That's pretty sad when I stop to think that 10 years ago almost the entire store was full of computer games.

Is that what XBOX has done to us?

The only Mac game I ever bought in a store (Babbages) was Traitors Gate, which was a PC/Mac hybrid.  I have always gotten my games online.

lol, another thread ressurection by Romnut

Mind you in 2 years, I'm afraid to say that the once 'reasonable' amount of shelf space given over to PC games in GAME (the largest remaining retail outlet for games in the UK) has shrunk even more

.

This trend in retail stores big and small has been going on here in the USA for several years now. It is not only due to the increased interest / expansion of all console games but also because the games for those systems have three very distinct advantages in general.

1. They take up a lot less space per unit during all phases of distribution, storage and sales.

2. They are not returned so often due to technical problems.

3. They have a relatively high sales price per unit with fast turnover and reasonably short shelf lives.

So from the retailer's perspective, they represent many solid advantages, a better overall profit and far fewer hassles. They are also easier to categorize and understand by what is usually a very young, inexperienced sales staff that does in fact relate much better to the product and to the average customer.

Add it all up and there is no mystery why so many retailers have gone this route.

Cheers,  Terry

I suppose this all means that in the very near future, our ONLY source for Adventure Games will be the internet.

Yes, it sucks to have really well refined tastes in PC games these days doesn't it?

ahhhhhhhhhhh that pisses me off so much...............

When I found out that they moved all the PC games at EB, I went up to one of them and smacked 'em in the ear......

And then stormed out the door vehemently shouting, "Curse you Red Baron!"

The CompUSA stores near me all have huge PC game sections.  The Best Buy stores have decent PC sections.

Circuit City, EB Games, Gamestop, and Walmart stores have really small sections.

I really don't mine getting my games online.

Luckily here in old Europe PC games still sell well. I guess the audience is a bit difference and many people who grew up with computer games still buy them, also PC games are sold in those DVD boxes here as well so the amount of shelf space is the same. Maybe the PC gamers in Europe are older then "electronic game" players in the US?

I love Media Play (they must love me, too, considering how much money I spend there!).  I went ahead and signed up for their "Replay card" last year and just yesterday got enough coupons back for a free game.

Wal-mart just expanded their gaming section here, too, just this week.  They even had a couple of adventures and I bought "The Black Mirror" for a co-worker for Christmas.

EB games is overrun with console games, but I play PS2 sometimes and don't mind so much.  They have a great bargain bin, great used games, and went out of their way to get me a copy of Syberia 2 two days after it's release (they weren't due to get it for another MONTH!!).

But, like most of you, I mostly order online.  Easy, fast, and I can do it in my pj's.

Deleted UserHere in Sarasota, Florida, there are 2 EB Games and one Babbage's/Gamespot.  One of each is in the huge mall, which I'd rather avoid, and the other EB Games is in a smaller strip mall that's closer to me.  The smaller EB is usually better stocked for PC games and adv games, but that's not saying much.  In the mall, Babbage's has more, perhaps 5-6 at a time.

My concern about us all buying online is this:
Sales figures are compiled from brick-and-mortar stores only, not online stores.  It may be that the more of us that buy online, the more we collectively are shooting ourselves in the foot.  I believe this is because the online stores buy in quantity for longer sales periods, where shelf space is not an issue.  This will lead developers/publishers to believe that a game isn't selling well.  It's a poor system, but it's what we have right now.  So I have to say, in the US for now, do at least try to buy from brick-and-mortar stores, and if they don't have the games, complain to them, order them if they'll let you, and then if all else fails, then buy them online.
