(Focus Multimedia, 1998)

This is a very unusual game based on a Norwegian(?) book that covers philosophy in a multimedia context including puzzles. It reminded me a little of the game Ceremony of Innocence with its striking visuals and surreal atmosphere. The game has an automatic save feature, which means no worrying about forgetting to save, but it doesn't allow for multiple save games. I always have a concern about this; having once played a game almost through to the end, the computer developed a random error, and I lost the whole thing. I am a regular saver! There are dialogs through the game, in which your answers have little consequence (I think). I haven't included them in the walkthrough. This was a mild diversion and heartily recommended to the blossoming philosopher. The puzzles will not challenge an experienced gamer for long. Certainly a unique topic in adventure/puzzle games!

Beginnings

Click on the gadfly to learn about his role. Click on the question marks until the question "Who am I?" appears in bold, larger letters. Click on it and the cutscene plays.

Eclipse

Sophie sends you a mysterious email. Read it. In the solar system diagram, move the moon over the sun. A solar eclipse occurs, followed by a cutscene.

Mythology

The next puzzle is the Yggdrasil tree of Norse mythology. Click on the crocodile. Before it reaches the other side you must click on the six hidden animals: four deer, an eagle, and a squirrel. If you click them in time, a snowflake appears. The answer to the horoscope question is Scorpio. Click on the scorpion for the next cutscene.

Four Elements

The next puzzle involves choosing the four elements that make up the entire world. Click on all four levers and a cutscene plays, transporting you to Lego Land.

Lego

Click on the email. This puzzle is about a key. Click on the Lego pieces to form a key. Once in their correct positions, they become immobile, so you can get this by trial and error. The solution is as follows:

  • Put a block under the question mark
  • Put one to the right of it
  • Put one between the period and the question mark
  • Put the next to the right of that one
  • Put one block at top left
  • Put another under that

When asked about the building blocks of things, reply "atoms." Click on the Lego door to enter the gate, and you arrive at the fate market.

Fair of Fate

You can divert yourself with the fate attractions here. They are of no consequence in the game. Click on the Oracle. When finished, go to Agoride, which takes you back in time to ancient Agora.

Agoride

After listening to the stall owner talk about eggs, exit right to meet Socrates and Meno. Listen to their lengthy discussion. Eventually, you will return to the stall. This time, head left. This takes you to Plato's amphitheater. Click on the pentagram game to play it. The way to solve it is as follows:

  • Picture the pentagram as a circle of five holes on the outside of a circle of five on the inside
  • Choose one of the outside circles
  • Place a ball two spaces away from your chosen hole
  • Click on the chosen hole to place it permanently
  • This time choose a hole one space clockwise from the one you just placed
  • This time, though, your goal is to place the ball in the inside circle
  • Place the ball two spaces away from the hole
  • Click on the hole
  • Continue with the outside hole one space away clockwise and so on until you win the game

You are now transported to the monastery.

The Cloister

At the monastery, you must click on the candles in this order: upper right, lower left, lower right, upper left, center left. After the candles are all lit and you have some more reading, you are presented with several questions. When answered, a cutscene leads to the Renaissance.

Renaissance Discoveries

Swap the position of the sun and the earth in the solar system. Click on the cannon. Examine the painting--the vanishing point is at the foot of the small mountain. Click several times and lines appear. With the telescope, adjust the lenses until the image is clear. You are then transported to the Baroque stage.

The Stage

Examine the paper on the stage. A medallion appears. Examine the painting for a macabre image. Sophie sends an email. Pull the chain at right--a picture of a butterfly appears. Click on the butterfly, and a cutscene plays.

Baroque Illusion

Click alternately on the man, the butterfly, and the box. Pull on the chain at right until a clock appears. Click on the clock, and a cutscene plays.

The Sense Game

Begin the game of the senses, but don't panic if you are having a hard time--success is not important to continue. When asked the important question about sensory input, reply "the senses." A cutscene plays.

Limbo

Read the mail and answer the questions. When complete, click on the door to exit. Uh oh! It won't let you leave. Click on the email--when done, you are transported to the far side.

The Far Side

Click on the envelope, which triggers a philosophical exchange. Listen to the telephone call. Click on the window at right to continue to the forest.

Romantic Wood

Sophie and Alberto have a discussion. After that, Hansel and Gretel philosophize. Click on the area at right, and Hansel and Gretel appear. Click on Hansel, and he will become a tree (as he desires). Then click on Gretel to move to the next area.

Revolution

First watch a discussion between Sophie and Alberto, and then a monolog by a soldier. When he disappears, pick up his gun and shoot the window at left and the one at right. Knock on the door. A cutscene plays, allowing you access to the cabin.

Between the Lines

Search for and read all the different documents about Dyaus, Sophie, Alberto, Major, you, and the one labeled with the question mark. When you have examined all of them, click on the document stuck to the wall at the left upper part of the screen. A cutscene transports you to the next screen.

Subconscious

Click on all three floating symbols until you have seen all the videos. You are then presented with a jigsaw puzzle.

Invitation

You must place the puzzle pieces within the frame. This is an easy puzzle because when you place the puzzle piece near where it should go, it will fit it automatically. Trial and error will take you two minutes to complete it. When complete, an additional piece is fit in the puzzle, and an invitation to a garden party is presented to you. Click on it, and you will be presented with the conclusion.

Garden Party

Listen to the final discussions between Sophie and the Major and Sofie. Click on the hotspots until you have heard all the philosophical quotes. The Major asks one final question regarding his thoughts about where thoughts come from. The answer is dust. After typing this in, the end cutscene plays, and you have to manually quit the game.
