Agapito's Crazy Adventure
(Pocket Price/Midas Interactive, 1999)
Walkthrough

This game is an independent release but manages to rise above its humble origins. It features nice cartoon animated graphics similar to Curse of Monkey Island (though not as refined or smooth). The demo is readily available on the Internet and consists of about a fifth of the complete game. Obviously, this is a very short game. Until I received a copy in a trade, I was under the impression that this game was only available for purchase and download online. The game is Spanish in origin and shows in some of the translation. Being an independent game, it doesn't have any voices, only sound effects. This is quite strange-to be able to hear someone knocking but then not the knocker speaking, is a very unusual situation for me. This greatly lessened my feeling of immersion and enjoyment but despite this, I played the game to its fruition. Where this game shines is in its humor-it manages to surpass a player's expectations of the simple "find an item" tasks through liberal use of humor. The game shouldn't pose much difficulty for most experienced players but has hints on the disk if stuck. I recommend sticking it out, because the puzzle solving is what made the game take as long as it did. Despite being made in 1999, the game plays in 640x480 setting (i.e. in a window if you have your screen on higher resolutions). For a more immersive effect, I recommend manually changing the screen size to 640x480 before you start. The game was completely stable-I experienced no glitches, bugs, or crashes. That being said, it is a very simple game, and has less opportunity to have incompatibility than a modern 3D blockbuster that makes use of fog effects or other high tech options. A way to improve this game would be to add voices and at least double its length. This little company has obvious potential for making a great game given the right budget and staffing. Let's hope someone does.

Without further ado, here's the…

Ballad of Agapito

Agapito sat at his breakfast table, pouring out Corn Flakes-a very stable
Start to every working day;
Out popped a voucher for a vacation: he'd invite Susan, his girlfriend, for sensation,
He hoped she'd see his way!

Off to the airport Agapito went, with Susan, surely his Heaven sent
But promptly she disappeared.
So Agapito was left alone to go. An optimist: at least he got the window!
But once onboard, it was what he feared!

Sitting in the cargo hold, no seat at this stage; near him a gorilla locked in a cage.
Two crew were controlling the flight.
He spoke to the crew briefly, a missing map of concern, chiefly.
The gorilla would not give without a fight.

So he crumpled the tickets into a ball, wound back, really gave it his all
And threw the ball into the cage.
The gorilla rose up to full height, gritted his teeth, ready for a fight
And threw the other ball of paper out in his rage.

Agapito found on the paper to all examination, that it was a map to the island vacation
So he promptly gave it to the crew.
Thirty hours later on their route (he was lucky he wore a parachute)
Thrown out the cargo door-what to do?

He fell like a stone but luck was with him; not so good looking but only half as dim
From the parachute he promptly used the ring.
To the island he floated down, awaiting the jewel in his holiday crown
But alas no queen to meet this king!

Instead, her much older grandfather waited, and Citroen, not limousine as stated,
Off for a noisy drive to his accommodation,
They forgot to send his luggage too, but luckily this was nothing new:
Rooms were provided with clothing to specification.

Over to the TV Agapito strode, to find it needed a new cathode,
But from underneath, in a cupboard, took
A game console in full working condition, excepting (and he knew it to be his mission),
Batteries-for them he'd have to look.

He opened the door and out he went, over to another door, a room surely meant
As a bathroom and toilet combination.
He took the bath gel from the sink, looked at the bath, and with a wink
Stated the floor would only hold in moderation.

Down the stairs to the ground floor, to talk to the owner once more,
To find out where to get batteries new.
He headed down to the Western Beach, two hours later finally did reach
And took a jar from bushes without further ado.

The jar, though empty, claimed to hold a "hair growth" potion; Agapito pocketed it and his very next notion
Was to enter the "Happy Hake" greet the owner sleeping:
He woke fully alert, offering shells few for all the money Agapito had, he knew
The deed done, there was no time for weeping

Agapito walked out to the terrace, beautiful beach view, to the table there but nothing to do
Back to the hotel, a then into a two hour trip
To East Beach, another two hour walk, to an old fisherman (full of beard) to talk
Keen to question and absorb all and any tip.

The old man more concerned with continued fishing, could not be drawn; Agapito was left wishing
So he filled his jar with water from the seashore
He strolled back to the hotel; his mission: to use the car he needed permission
Grandfather had it: until found, there'd be no roar!

Back to the West: he'd forgotten the batteries; Spoke to the owner and gotten with a please
The videogame console suddenly came to life
In exchange for the swordfish on the wall, he gave a calendar: girl baring all!
A fish would surely give less trouble and strife.

Back to the East went Agapito our hero; in the eyes of the fisherman, no longer a zero
He swapped the fish for the old man's rod.
He cast the line into the sea, caught a toilet seat plain as can be!
What could come next for this fishing god?

Again out went the line to the deep, a steering wheel, an octopus: both did he keep
And returned once again to hotel sports car.
He hooked up the wheel, drove away with a squeal
To the North Beach, no longer so far.

He entered this hotel, head held high but doom lay in store: the receptionist said, "no room"
So he made his way to the private beach
A few steps he took onto the sand, spoke briefly with a cautious boy, and
Boldly strode to the bar (well within reach).

With a feeling of great dejection, for from the beach: forced ejection
Agapito was not recognized as a hotel guest.
Agapito not to be deterred, realized where he had erred
He headed to the back of the bar with zest.

Through a small hole, nearly hidden, Agapito slyly gazed, action unbidden
And saw the bald spot on the barman's head
The barman wouldn't be fooled by tricks, so Agapito put octopus ink in the mix
With tonic offering, that barman was surely misled!

Agapito also spied a box of matches, and as sure as from an egg a chick hatches
A plan leapt from the shell of his mind
For behind the bar, using the hole, he put his trusty fishing pole
The matches were his: delivered, sealed, signed!

So back to the bar to chat with the girl, in with a chance, final chapters would unfurl
He proceeded to charm her with some made up tosh
Agapito asked her out promptly for a date, and knew before it got too late
He'd need to book dinner, get a suit, have a wash.

To West Beach to book a table for two, he begged and begged to ensure that the do
Would be exactly as he would need
Back to his hotel he asked the man there, if he could get a suit anywhere
"Try the other hotel": the advice he chose to heed.

On to North beach, gave the boy there a trade: his videogame console for the boy's old spade
Agapito went to the back of the bar, no doubt
When proceeding to dig at the hole, it was not long before he lost all control
As the barman fell down and threw Agapito out!

But again, Agapito went to the back of the bar stand, on the counter at right a card, promptly taken in hand
A plan devised-then into the fancy hotel to get a new suit
The manager insisted he prove he was a relation of Frederico Smith, a former guest on vacation
He produced the card and was treated with no more snoot!

He arranged for the suit to be sent to his room, went back to his hotel, in his bathroom to entomb
He lit the heater, in bath from himself all dirt to rend
Then to dinner with Agapita, on her looks to dwell; but, alas, of her fiancé she did previously tell
Our hero was left without the expected happy end!
