Frank
Herbert's Dune
Action/Adventure/Science Fiction for PC and PS2
Q4 2001

12/14/2001 - You
can order Frank Herbert's Dune now from Dreamcatcher. You
can also see a new Dune flash trailer at the Dreamcatcher site.
Erik found a little information
about this game at GA
Source several days ago and was kind enough to send it along
so that I could post it here on the Schedule. Thanks, Erik. Prior
to this, I had not heard of WideScreen Games. And when I went to
my usual sources for developer and publisher information, I was
unable to find it. But some persistence paid off. I found the site
through AltaVista.
The first thing that
you must do is download the Flash
plugin if you don't already have it. (I don't. It was on my old
PC but not this one.) After you install Flash, you will be able
to get into the site. I have not done that yet but plan to tonight.
GA Source tells us a
little about the game, and I will share it here: The name Frank
Herbert's Dune is tentative, so don't be surprised if/when it
changes. It will be a 3D action/adventure for the PC and the Playstation
2. And--be still my heart--it will be published by the nice people
at Cryo. This might be another French coup.
(03/06/01) I have always
been a science fiction dabbler, and the Dune books by Frank
Herbert are my top choices.
Some years ago there
was a Dune game, but I do not know who developed it or if
it was successful. This one seems to have everything going for it.
Cryo and Widescreen Games, in collaboration with DreamCatcher, are
quite a strong development and production team. And the Dune
novels' subject matter is stunning.
I remember reading about
the planet of Arrakis (Dune) and the Houses of Atreides and Harkonnen.
The Spice that was necessary for survival in this distant and imaginary
universe was more valuable than gold or diamonds. Without the Spice,
life would not evolve or prosper. And if you read any of the books,
surely you remember the magnificent worm. In my humble opinion,
the worm was the pivotal character in these great works of fiction.
The worm was the character that could humble all before it.
I don't often play science
fiction games. but if I can manage the action in this one I will
be chained to my computer. According to DreamCatcher, Frank Herbert's
Dune will be a 3D real-time, two-thirds action and one-third
adventure game bringing together a production crew that has worked
on Prisoner of Ice, Alone in the Dark III, and Worms.
